Mural in the Reading Room of the Luhansk Oblast Library Named After Gorkiy
That's a long title. The library itself boasts over a million titles, and is one of the only completely public access libraries in the
country. Most libraries here keep their books in stacks, and patrons have to request the titles that they want. Here, they're
free to browse the shelves and see what strikes their fancy. Another thing that astounded me was that the library still uses a
card catalogue. Yup. For one million titles. They're working on digitizing everything, but it will take quite a while. This Oblast
(an administrative district most similar to State, I would say), located in the Eastern part of Ukraine, still has a lot of Soviet
influenced, as is evident in this mural which depicts both Lenin - the guy in the goatee on the right - and the hammer and
sickle.
Oh, and because I've been away on business, if you care, check out yesterday's pic.
